Shopify UK troubleshooting guide
How to Fix Invalid Region [region] in Google Merchant Center for Shopify UK
This error usually tells you that Merchant Center received an unsupported shipping-region value. Trace one affected product from Google back through Google & YouTube and Shopify before changing a whole catalogue.
Plain-English answer
Merchant Center received a shipping region value it cannot accept.
Google says Invalid region [region] appears when the submitted region sub-attribute inside shipping is invalid. The region field is optional and supported only for particular location methods and countries. The practical question is not simply “what should I type?” It is “which source is submitting this value, and will that source recreate it after I edit it?”
Do this first
Preserve one clean evidence trail.
- Open one affected product in Merchant Center and save the exact issue wording.
- Record the product ID, target country, current Source and the shipping value Google processed.
- Check whether Google & YouTube is importing shipping automatically or Merchant Center is set manually.
- Compare that product with its Shopify General or custom shipping profile before changing anything.
What Invalid region [region] means
The message concerns shipping geography in product data. Google's shipping [shipping] attribute can describe a country, optional region, service and price for an offer. Offer-level shipping can override account-level shipping for the matching location, so an invalid offer-level value can affect a product even when the account's main shipping policy looks correct.
For supported uses, Google expects a valid region, state, territory or prefecture value. Its Invalid shipping region guidance refers to ISO 3166-2 subdivision codes without the country prefix. Google's broader UK shipping guidance also describes outward postcode formats for applicable postcode-based coverage. Do not guess a code from a Shopify zone label: first determine which type of location rule your source is trying to submit.
Why it can appear after products were previously approved
Previous approval only describes the data and checks at that earlier time. A Shopify shipping-zone edit, a product moving between profiles, a Google & YouTube setting change, a source refresh, or another feed or API update can change the product data Merchant Center processes. Google's documentation expressly notes that automated shipping updates from a platform such as Shopify may overwrite manual Merchant Center changes.
These are possible causes, not a diagnosis of your store. The quickest way to distinguish them is to compare a single affected product's source and shipping value with the current integration and Shopify profile. If the same invalid value returns after removal, that is a useful sign that an upstream source is regenerating it.
Start with one affected SKU
In Merchant Center, open Products, then Needs attention, and filter for Invalid region [region]. Choose one affected product that you can identify confidently in Shopify. Save its product ID, target country and the exact issue text. If many products are affected, download the affected-items list, but do not start editing the whole catalogue yet.
Google defines this as a product-data problem: the value submitted for the optional region [region] sub-attribute of shipping [shipping] is not valid. That points first to shipping or location data attached to the offer. It does not, by itself, say that the product title, image or physical item is wrong.
Inspect the value Merchant Center actually received
Open the affected product details and inspect its current attributes and Source. Merchant Center can receive products from an ecommerce-platform connection, a file, spreadsheet, direct entry, the Merchant API or more than one source. Your task is to find which source supplied this product and where its shipping data is being set.
Record the shipping attribute exactly as Merchant Center shows it, including country, region, service and price where present. A value that looks sensible as a Shopify zone name is not automatically a valid Merchant Center region value. Google's format and supported-location rules control what the product data may contain.
Identify who owns the shipping settings
In Shopify, open Sales channels → Google & YouTube → Settings and check the shipping setting. It should show whether the channel is automatically importing the store's shipping settings or whether rates are managed manually in Merchant Center. Capture that state before changing it.
If automatic import is active, Shopify says updates to the store's shipping settings are reimported into Merchant Center. Google also warns that shipping changes made through an automated API, including a third-party platform such as Shopify, may overwrite manual Merchant Center changes. A manual edit that later returns is therefore evidence to trace the upstream integration, not a reason to repeat the same edit indefinitely.
Compare the General and custom Shopify profiles
Go to Shopify Settings → Shipping and delivery. Confirm which profile contains the affected product, which fulfilment location it uses, and which UK zone and rates apply. Shopify's General shipping profile is the default for products not assigned to a custom profile; custom profiles can apply different rules to selected products.
This distinction matters because Shopify's Google & YouTube documentation says only rates from the General shipping profile can sync automatically. It warns that custom-profile rates can sync incorrectly and cause errors. That makes a custom profile a strong diagnostic lead, not proof of the cause in every account.
Correct the source, then allow normal reprocessing
Once you have identified the source of the invalid value, correct that source. Depending on the evidence, that might mean fixing the General-profile UK zone, moving an affected product out of an incompatible custom profile, selecting manual Merchant Center shipping for a setup Shopify cannot import correctly, or correcting another feed or API that owns the offer-level shipping value.
Refresh or resubmit through the same approved source and allow Merchant Center to process it. Then reopen the same product ID and confirm that the invalid value is gone and that the issue is no longer shown. Avoid creating a second competing source while troubleshooting; that makes ownership harder to establish.
The diagnostic path to follow
- Stage 1
Shopify
Profile, zone, location and rate for the affected product
- Stage 2
Google & YouTube
Automatic import or manual Merchant Center shipping
- Stage 3
Merchant Center
Processed product source, shipping value and current issue
Compare the stages in that order, then correct the stage that owns the wrong value. Do not assume the last screen showing the error is the system that created it.
What not to do
Avoid changes that hide the source.
- Do not edit hundreds of products first. Prove the source and correction on one affected SKU.
- Do not keep deleting a value that returns. Trace the integration or data source that regenerates it.
- Do not create a second feed as a shortcut. Competing sources make product ownership and later updates harder to understand.
- Do not repeatedly request review. Let corrected product data process and check whether the product-level issue clears before treating it as a review problem.
- Do not change domain or account to evade the issue. Correct the shipping data in the source that owns it.
- Do not assume “nothing changed.” Connected platforms, profiles and automated refreshes can alter downstream data.
Evidence to collect before changing settings
When another Merchant Center review is relevant
Invalid region is normally a product-data correction task. Google's official path is to correct the affected products and re-upload or refresh them through the chosen source. Processing can take time, so first confirm that the new value has reached Merchant Center and that the issue has cleared from the affected item.
A separate review is relevant only when Merchant Center presents one for a wider account or policy issue after the underlying data is correct. Do not use repeated review requests as a substitute for fixing a feed or sync value. If the source remains unclear, preserve the evidence rather than making more untracked changes.
For the wider pre-review process, see what to check before another Merchant Center review. If other product errors appear alongside the region issue, start with our product-disapproval diagnostic guide.
When an independent diagnostic can help
If you cannot tell whether Shopify, Google & YouTube, another data source or Merchant Center is introducing the value, MerchantProof can organise the evidence into a correction order. The £99 one-time diagnostic is human-reviewed and evidence-led, does not require your Google account login, and provides a prioritised action plan for supported UK stores.
MerchantProof does not edit Shopify or Merchant Center for you, submit a review or appeal, see Google's hidden account reasoning, or guarantee approval or reinstatement.
